Carrier screening and other noninvasive prenatal tests (NIPT) are diagnostic procedures that can identify if a pregnant mother carries certain genes for a variety of genetic disorders and chromosomal abnormalities, including Down syndrome. These tests are extremely accurate and can be administered nine weeks into pregnancy. They can also be used to determine the baby’s gender.
