A hysteroscopy is a procedure used to closely examine the cervix and uterus. During the examination, a physician is able to take tissue samples for testing purposes. The most common reasons a hysteroscopy is prescribed is severe and painful cramping, heavy or abnormally long periods, bleeding or spotting between periods, or if you have suffered multiple miscarriages or are having difficulty getting pregnant. This is an outpatient procedure and may be conducted with or without anesthesia.
