In vitro fertilization, or IVF, is a process in which eggs and sperm are extracted and combined in a medical facility. Once an embryo is formed, it is implanted in the uterus. If successful, the mother is able to carry the baby to term and experience labor and delivery. Although IVF is used to treat a wide variety of infertility issues, it is typically not the first treatment option and is used only when other efforts have failed.
