Saline Infusion Sonogram (SIS)

A saline infusion sonogram (SIS) is used to ensure that the endometrial cavity of the uterus is clear and normal. Growths such as fibroids and polyps can develop in this uterine cavity and result in infertility. SIS is also an effective method for discovering scar tissue within the uterus. The outpatient ultrasound procedure is minor and typically requires less than 15 minutes to complete. Most saline infusion sonograms are conducted on patients who are about to begin IVF treatment or who experience recurrent pregnancy loss.
